Nurse Jane Page #4
Dear Nurse Jane,
I've been having incontinence problems for over 2 years know. In April of 1997 I had a motorcycle accident. Well, that night I wet the bed, and have ever since. That isn't the bad part. Shortly after that I started wetting during the day as well. I have been to dozens of doctors, I've had an MRI, Bonescans, x-rays, Flow tests, evoke potential. the doctors can't seem to find out why I'm having this problem. It still gets worse, about 10 months ago I started losing stool as well. I am completely incontinent now. I don't even leave the house for very long any more. I was just wondering if there was some other test or something that the doctors could do to help. Since I lost control of my bowels I've had numerous invading test. with no luck. Could you please help me?
Dear Sir,
Generally speaking a loss of bladder or bowel function secondary to trauma usually indicates nerve involvement somewhere. It sounds like you have had a bunch of tests. Have you had Urodynamics - a bladder function study test that will give some indication whether or not your bladder is having spasms which could cause incontinence or whether you have a flaccid bladder which you don't empty well and which is overflowing when capacity is reached. Many people that suffer from urinary incontinence also suffer from bowel incontinence as well. I would wonder if perhaps you have seen a reputable chiropractor or osteopathic physician, I find that sometimes these type of physicians are a little more open to the patient and not close minded. It maybe something as simple as nerve impingement that could be cleared by correcting a misaligned spinal column. I can't really say for sure, but if I were in a situation where I felt I had exhausted the typical medical routes, I would consider this option. Just make sure you ask around and find someone with a solid reputation.
